Sheriff's deputies said the body of Elliot Roe, 25, was discovered in the trunk of his car by a family member Tuesday morning.

Investigators said Roe's grandmother made the gruesome discovery on Palm Drive in east Bakersfield.

"As this family member was driving around, they found this vehicle, opened the trunk and made the discovery of the body that was in the trunk," said Senior Deputy Michael Whorf with the sheriff's department.

Neighbors living across the street said they noticed the car had been parked since Sunday.

"The grandma made the stop in front of the car, opened it and smelled something," said Secundino Carreon, a neighbor. "She started crying and crying."

Investigators said the family planned to report Roe missing later on Tuesday if he was not found.

Homicide detectives spent most of the morning looking for clues around Roe's white Toyota Camry.

Detectives are investigating this case as a suspected homicide.

Investigators said there were no signs of trauma to Roe, and the cause of death remains undetermined.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
